The Dutch Food & Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA)

The Dutch Food & Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) is a major supervisory authority. Our work touches the daily lives of almost all Dutch people. We monitor seven domains: animal welfare, food safety, product safety, nature & environment, tobacco & alcohol control, animal health and planthealth. In all these areas, smart data collection and automation of parts of supervision play a major role, now and in the future.

Because contractors (sectors) are themselves responsible for their performance, it is very important for the NVWA that we can assess risks without visiting everyone every day. Good data management is of vital importance in that process. To work efficiently, inspectors must have easy access to dashboards along the way in which they can view the correct, up-to-date data before determining where to inspect.

Of course, we know that complete reliance on dashboards also entails risks and that is why we also conduct 'performance reviews' with our tools at least once a year. Are they doing what they are supposed to do, has no unintended bias crept in? Are they fed with current and correct data, does this data tell me what I need to know or does it need adjustment
